At the AGU fall meeting, regional reps and those involved with APECS at the international level met to lay out the organizational system for USAPECS. The Canadian system was used for guidance, with some modification such that the board positions are tied to specific responsibilities. For the foreseeable future, those positions will be fairly flexible (i.e., one year there may be a PNW regional rep, but if nobody is interested in that role it may not exist the next year). Many of these spots will be as regional reps – responsible for maintaining regional lists and making sure activities happen in their respective parts of the country – maintaining the strengths of the previous system of regional committees in the new national organization. The board will be lead by two co-chairs elected each January by the board.
The Board will consist of members in the following roles, and may be comprised of as many people as seems reasonable:
Regional reps
n charge of local events, maintaining regional lists. Defined by the level of activity in the area (may represent one particularly active university or an entire region of the country).
Event reps
In charge of events at meetings (AGU, etc)
Organization liaison
Represent USApecs on committees for other organizations, pending partnerships with other organizations…
International APECS reps
Represent USApecs on the APECS International Membership Involvement Committee.
Project leads
Responsible for coordinating other things – mentor programs, outreach, etc. These positions will exist as there is a need for them.
Each position lasts one (calendar) year in duration and if nothing has happened in the previous year the position is forfeited. People serving on the board can (and are encouraged to) take on more than one role if they are so inclined.
Self-nomination for board positions will open on January 2 (estimated) with emails sent to Cryolist, APECS, etc. announcing the formation of USAPECS. Positions will begin as soon as they are filled. Not sure which position is right for you? We're happy to help - just get in touch!
IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN SERVING ON THE BOARD, PLEASE EMAIL A SHORT STATEMENT OF INTEREST (<200 WORDS) AND A CURRENT CV OR RESUME TO USAPECS@GMAIL.COM. INDICATE WHAT POSITION YOU WOULD BE INTERESTED IN FILLING.
Upcoming Elections
In addition to soliciting nominations for board members, there are two sets positions that will need to be filled soon.
Board chairs (as described previously)
APECS World Summit representitives
APECS has asked for up to three representatives from USAPECS to register by January 15.
Some travel funding may be available from APECS international, but we have been asked to do some fundraising to support our representitives as well.
