USAPECS Board Call Summary

On April 2, 2015, USAPECS had its second Board Call. We discussed our Polar Week activities, with a successful Reddit AMA organized by Chelsea Thompson and a twitter hashtag (#askUSAPECS). The twitter campaign got very little response - we think more advanced planning next time will help get the word out to people who might have more polar science questions. Future conference plans include the American Geological Union (AGU) Fall Meeting in December 2015 in San Francisco, California and the Arctic Science Summit Week (ASSW) in March 2016 in Fairbanks, Alaska. We are looking for people to organize the AGU event (panel discussion on writing effective proposals) and there may be opportunities to collaborate with the Hydrology section student representatives on something as well. Updates on ASSW will be sent out when available. Ellyn sent an update on the safety training program, with some information on the available National Science Foundation-sponsored field safety training and a suggestion that we plan to run field training webinars this year. One USAPECS rep got funding for the APECS World Summit, so we will be represented there and there will be a report after. We discussed the organizational document briefly, but determined that it warranted more discussion at our next meeting once people have had a chance to read and comment.
